Description
This is a solid vintage Conn 10M ‘transitional’ tenor from the prime vintage for these horns. The 250-260k serial Conns have a HUGE tone that is really hard to beat. They are called transitional because they show features of the earlier New Wonder II, and features of the following, 10M “Artist” tenors. This would have been sold by Conn without any lacquer, and so this horn has been lacquered after the fact. It doesn’t show signs of heavy buffing, so it could be the “first lacquer” that this horn got, or it could be relacquered a long time ago. It’s pretty hard to say. The necks on these transitional tenors are really special. You get something bigger sounding than a 10M, but with better intonation than some earlier models of Conn. It really slots in nicely, and has a fatness that goes all the way up high. These transitional tenors are also a great buy right now, because they are going up in value, but they are still quite affordable.
The pads on this horn are in pretty good shape. It has a mix of older and newer pads, and they are sealing well. Not a fresh overhaul, but freshly tuned up, and plays easily. The only past repair that is evident is a resoldered right hand thumb hook, which is not a big deal.
Vintage Conn tenors are getting pretty hard to find. This one is from an especially good serial range which is seldom seen for sale. Plays well, and it’s priced to sell!
