This is a rare burnished gold, portrait Conn New Wonder II soprano sax. It is really rare to see a portrait on a Conn soprano, and this one is particularly nice. It looks exactly like a Barn Owl, so some bird enthusiast out there should grab this very special horn and play it! I am a bird lover myself, and I am really tempted to keep this saxophone. Besides being a rare portrait model, it is also burnished gold, not the much more common matte gold. That means that this is thicker gold plate that was applied and smoothed laboriously using a hand burnishing tool! Way more special even than normal gold plate. In addition, this horn has a recent overhaul done with black roo pads, and it plays really well on them. It includes one of the nicest original cases that I have seen also. All in all, this is a package that is hard to beat.
Tonally, Conn New Wonder II sopranos are outstanding sounding saxophones. If you compare this to any modern soprano, it has a way BIGGER sound that is basically darker and warmer than anything made today. The intonation is quite good using a large chamber mouthpiece. The ergonomics are vintage, but not too hard to get around on. I find the left hand pinky keys quite comfortable on the New Wonder II, once you get used to them.
All in all, this is a really fabulous example of a vintage Conn soprano in just about the most rare and hard to find version, for a very good price, with a recent overhaul, playing great, needs nothing. If you want to have a soprano that basically maxes out most of the categories that people look for in a vintage saxophone, then this is probably it.
