Each of the Yamaha models has its strengths and weaknesses, but as far as I am concerned, the purple label 62’s are easily the best made so far (the next best tenors are the original 875, I think). They have a vintage warmth and interest to the tone while keeping Yamaha’s excellent ergonomics and intonation. That makes these very hard horns to beat. For anyone who wants to go vintage but not too vintage, this horn is a no-brainer.
This particular 62 is in excellent condition. It has no dents or dings. The only resolder I see is one foot of the low Eb key guard. The bow and bell flare look good, and the body tube is clean as well. There are some light scratches in the lacquer in a few places but the horn is in very good condition, and there is virtually no play wear. This horn plays great because it has just had all the pads replaced by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best saxophone techs in the business. The pads feel really nice and firm under the fingers – like dry leaves. Many players tell me that they have never felt a saxophone with pad work like this. These horns are hard to beat for all-around playability, tone, ergonomics, and intonation, which is probably why they are still so popular with pro players today.
