This is a player’s horn, which means that it has been played a lot and that it has a lot of lacquer wear. But on the other hand, it is a player’s horn, which means that it really does play well. In terms of condition, it has had a dent removed from the bow, and the neck has been pulled down slightly and repaired. One of the posts on the low C/Eb mechanism has been resoldered, I think. It is certainly original lacquer, and this early VII has the Mark VI engraving on the bell which looks good. The lacquer wear gives you instant street cred and gives you that vintage look that is imitated by modern horn manufacturers.
The pads on this horn are medium old, and it still plays pretty well after getting several pads replaced and being regulated. If it were mine, I would strip the remaining lacquer and get it repadded. It does promise to be a very good Mark VII. And for this price, you can easily afford to.
