The King Super 20’s that were made in Cleveland (like this) are the most desirable type among most players and collectors. (As a side note, the early Eastlake horns can also be very good.) This one is original lacquer at about 90% with some honest wear from playing on the back of the bell (which doesn’t show when you’re playing). It has mostly original pads, and you can play it enough to know that there is a good alto in here. But it will need more pad work or a repad in order to play its best. As far as other issues, there’s not much to mention – a couple of tiny dings removed (one from the neck, a couple from the back of the bow) which don’t show at all now and are very minor.
The Super 20 is a classic jazz alto, famously played by Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker among others. It has a nice, medium bright tone that can cut through as a lead alto sound with the right mouthpiece. It’s also a versatile, do it all kind of horn for most other types of playing (though I wouldn’t particularly recommend it for serious classical study). Super 20’s are great altos, and mechanically clean ones like this don’t come around that often. Most of the ones you see are beat up (and nickel keywork is really hard to straighten out if it’s been damaged) and much later than this.
Grab this one at a good price and get it overhauled how you like, and you’ll have a cool professional vintage horn for less than a new Yamaha.
