This is a cosmetically clean solid nickel-silver modern Keilwerth tenor in excellent playing condition. It has a recent MusicMedic overhaul completed this past May. It has black RooPads, oversize resonators and tone hole tuning (with little cork tuning crescents on F, E, D, and C) for improved intonation in the lower register. The MusicMedic job included all new pads, corks and firm white felts, as well as key fitting.
Tonally, Keilwerth represents a different sound concept from all other current makers. The sound is big and dark on the spectrum, not the delicate, focused Selmer-type core, but more of a fat, warm sound that is in the world of Grover Washington Jr and Don Braden (who both play(ed) similar horns). The nickel silver is the base metal on this horn, so it is not made of brass like most saxophones. This seems to contribute ideally to the spread, warm tone that the Keilwerth already goes for, so it makes sense that they offer this metal as an upgrade option. It’s a beautiful finish, and a superb horn overall. The original case is basically like new, and the horn shows only the most minor of play wear, because it was babied by its previous owner. If you’re in the market for something professional, with modern ergonomics, that sounds darker and more complex than other makes, and you want it both in excellent playing condition and for less than the new price, then this should be an obvious choice. These horns don’t come up for sale very often at all, so grab this one while you can. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
